May 12, 2019 at the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows―North Salem, NY

Four-time U.S. Olympian and New York State native, Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, secured a wet weather win in the $50,000 Old Salem Farm Grand Prix CSI2* (presented by The Kincade Group) aboard Garant, eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Warrant x C’est La Vie), who until now had never competed in a Grand Prix!

After nine horses advanced to the jump-off designed by USA’s own Eric Hasbrouck, Beezie showed off young Garant’s speed to post the fastest time by nearly two full seconds in 33.84, a tie-breaking time over Beat Mändli’s 35.46 seconds. Despite the weather and it being Garant’s first Grand Prix, the combination was unbeatable.

Garant, owned by Abigail Wexner, came to Beezie during the fall of his six-year-old year, but before joining the John Madden Sales string, he was competitive in young horse competition and won the 2016 FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for five-year-old horses in Lanaken, Belgium (under Dutch rider Willem Greve).

“He’s one we have a lot of hopes for!” said Beezie. “He will move up to the 1.50m consistently this summer, and by the end of the year, we have some smaller Grand Prix classes planned for him again.” ―Beezie Madden

Garant has a big stride, and Beezie galloped him up the first line in six strides. “[He] was pretty quick to the double, caught a long one to the next, and nailed the last jump off the turn,” recalled Beezie. “He was really good to me there because I don’t think he really knew where he was going at that point.”

“He made a great effort.” ―Beezie Madden
