Getting Personal With U.S. Dressage

  • Never hide the little things that make you YOU. They might be your best parts πŸ’› A #blueeyedhorse is #intriguing 🐎 What little things make you YOU??? #eqammoto
  • @olivia_lagoy_weltz (EQ AM's dressage contributor) recently posted about the horse that taught her the most. Her post inspired me to post something similar. 🐎🐎🐎 Which horse has left an indelible mark on your head and heart? Who taught you the most? Who would you call your #hearthorse? Are they one in the same?

For me they are the same horse: Lincoln II. He was a 1997 Hanoverian gelding from Canada. I rescued him in 2001; he was 4 and I was 17. He was underweight, unfit, and already 17.2hh. He needed OCD surgery on both hocks. It took me almost a year to work off his surgery at the veterinary hospital. Then he got Lyme disease, then he got Lymphnangitis in both hind legs, and then he died in my arms of an embolism on January 11th, 2006 when he was 18.1hh and just coming 9. He was my giant baby who never got a chance to grow up. 😭

It's a tragic story for sure, and watching him leave me will definitely NEVER leave me, but he taught me so much in those 4 short years. He obviously taught me A LOT about veterinary care, horse health management, how to manage money (he had his own checking account to make sure I could pay his bills before buying anything for myself, like food...), and he taught me to be PATIENT with recovery and training. But, mainly he taught me what it meant to WORK YOUR ASS OFF for what you LOVE. I loved Lincoln more than anything in the world, and I always will.
